Auction Watch #116

There’s a saying, “Sex is like pizza, even when it’s bad it’s still pretty good.” At first that seemed like an appropriate segue from Auction Watch #115 to Auction Watch #116, but it’s not. That saying is just plain wrong. A penis can break during sex. That’s not good – no matter what. And what happens if the pepperoni on you pizza is made out of dog? Even if it tastes good, that’s going to be a huge bummer.

So here’s the broken penis, dog pepperoni Auction Watch #116.

The first auction, Mattel M.U.S.C.L.E. Muscle 10 Pack Display Box RARE, is another classic for the ephemera sub-culture of M.U.S.C.L.E. collecting.

The 10-Pack Display Case is truly equal parts beauty and functionality. One of the often overlooked aspects of this piece is its connection to He-Man Slime. Which display case did Mattel design first? And if M.U.S.C.L.E. had continued, would a 48-can display case have been introduced?

It has been some time since the last 10-pack display case appeared (Auction Watch #99) which nearly insures it selling for more than it has in the past. The final price of the first auction will be $35.50.

The second auction, 1986 Talbot Toys Weird Ball Flyweight Wrestling Set RARE complete M.U.S.C.L.E., is not a M.U.S.C.L.E. item but certainly deserves some attention.

Weird Ball Wrestlers are one of the many mini-figure lines to spawn from the success of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures. While not all M.U.S.C.L.E. collectors are Weird Ball Wrestlers collectors they are certainly familiar with the figures. However the wrestling ring and its box is probably something not many M.U.S.C.L.E. collectors have seen.

The ring itself is rather plain, but the box art is fantastic and truly the gem of this auction. The box art could attract the attention of wrestling and monster fans – not just mini-figure collectors. Weird Ball Wrestlers never command a premium, but the rare appearance of this ring with its box is likely to drive bidding past any previous Weird Ball Wrestlers auction.

Many collectors seem comfortable assigning a $100 price tag to an item they want but are unfamiliar with. This is likely to happen with this auction. The final price of the second auction will be $115.50.

The third auction, Vintage Muscle Men figues lot of 103 with 5 original pails and wrestling arena, is a classic M.U.S.C.L.E. lot.

In the lot there are 102 Flesh figures, five empty 10-packs, a ring in very good condition with its box, and a Satan Cross figure. That’s going to be a very fun lot to open. So fun in fact that it’s entertaining to imagine a kid ending up with the lot. Of course that’s not going to happen, but this is a perfect lot of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures as toys and not collectibles.

The final price of the third auction will be $131.50.

The fourth auction, M.U.S.C.L.E. / MUSCLE FIGURES STILL IN ORIGIONAL PACKAGING WITH SATAN CROSS, is another Satan Cross in a 4-pack.

Are there still enough Satan Cross fanatics out there to push this price to around $100?

The fifth auction, TMNT MINI MUTANTS MIGHTY MUSCLE COMBO Ninja Turtles Donatello moc, was a happy accident searching for M.U.S.C.L.E. figures.

It appears that Mirage Studios is clearing out some of their stuff. It seems like a variety of stuff will be appearing over the next few weeks.

Normally Certificates of Authenticity are about as worthless as the paper they are printed on. However the COA’s from Mirage Studios feature the signature of Peter Laird – which adds an extra element of cool.

Got the Weird Ball Wrestler ring for 53.00$. Pretty glad about it.

As a kid I had no idea Weird Ball Wrestlers existed but know I truly loves this little bugger. They pop off now and then but carded or boxed example are hard to come by, and indeed the box art is splendid.
For awhile, except fo some character that were also part of the trading cards set (which I believe is the first Weird Ball product), part of the line was unnamed.

I have a fair collection (now embellished by the ring set) but so far never fell upon a flesh colored wrestler, only red, green, black and purple. The hunt goes on 😉
