Monday Morning M.U.S.C.L.E. Musings #56

Painted M.U.S.C.L.E. Figures
by Professor Terry

Over the years I have been able to collect a number of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures that have been painted by various artists. The more professional looking figures have come from LRG members Ersico and Plastic Playhouse. These artists have painted figures of my choosing in the color scheme of my choice. In some cases, I have asked these two artists to paint up the same figure to see their interpretation of what would look cool for a particular figure.

Much like the TV show Tattoo Nightmares, painting is a great way to cover up M.U.S.C.L.E. figures that have ink marks and such. The decision to pay for Satan Cross or #153 to be custom painted is an interesting one. Would someone pay a higher price for a figure just to get it painted? I personally would love to find a damaged Satan Cross and then have it painted. But a full price one? I’m not sure.

If you don’t want to pay to have figures painted, you could search eBay for auctions with a few painted figures. This method results in figures that are very hit and miss in terms of quality. I once bought a lot painted figures by an unknown artist who wrote the name “POS” on the figures feet. These particular figures were really quite well done. Others have been so amateurish that I could have done a better job myself – which is saying something, because I think I’d be awful at painting figures. M.U.S.C.L.E. figures are just so very small. I have tried my hand at painting a couple of Deka Kinkeshi with better results.

Those who have read MMMM #50 will see that I have had nearly all NFL teams painted up on the #134 figure. This past week I finally saw the Kinnikuman movie in which figure #134 has a small part. I now plan to add a custom paint job like the version of the movie.

The thing with custom painted figures is that you should buy them when you see them. With the new MOTU M.U.S.C.L.E. release, I really regret not buying the pictured MOTU custom painted M.U.S.C.L.E. figures that were done a couple of years ago. I will have to find flesh figures of these sculpts and get them done.

Those are some really great paint jobs. The group pic is awesome. Instead of using a real MUSCLE Satan Cross for a custom paint job. You could use a resin figure. It’s what I use. I chop up and made a custom Satan Cross couple of years ago. I couldn’t use a real one.
