Monday Morning M.U.S.C.L.E. Musings #81

M.U.S.C.L.E. Figure #145
by Professor Terry

This week MMMM #81 is featuring Black Tomahawk (M.U.S.C.L.E. figure #145).

M.U.S.C.L.E. figure #145 is both personally a special figure for me and a not so special one.

I’ll explain why. When I was collecting M.U.S.C.L.E. figures in my youth I hated this figure. It was bloody everywhere – in every 4-pack, in every 10-pack and it was always a red one. I swear it was more common that a Purple #208. It was a pretty ordinary feeling for both my mum and me if she brought me a 4-pack in the grocery order and then hearing me groan if it had a Red #145 in it. Then mum would get shitty and tell me to go pick my own packs. I would purposely not buy a 4-pack that had him in it, even if the other 3 figures were highly desirable. I think I would have passed on the 4-pack even if the other three figures were Claws.

To me it was that figure that made a little bit of bile rise in my throat. If you had two of them, nobody would want to trade for it. You get the idea, this figure was the pain in my ass.

WHICH is why it’s actually special now. It’s not the figure itself, it’s just an ugly guy holding a couple of axes. It’s what it now represents. Every time I see this figure I remember how much fun I had as a child collecting M.U.S.C.L.E. figures. If it wasn’t for Black Tomahawk, I would never have scoured through every single 4-pack in my local Franklins supermarket, discovered many other figures in the M.U.S.C.L.E. line, nor would I have learnt the lesson of having something that nobody else wants and the rejection of trades.

Normally, I would not have interest in aquiring a figure like Black Tomahawk in all colors. Two Class A figures of one figure usually scares me off, it’s difficult enough to get one Class A figure for a reasonable price. In this case I traded for the Purple Class A and bought the Light Blue one for $20.

See the irony here? I couldn’t trade away a Black Tomahawk in my youth and now I wanted to trade for one! On another note I forgot to get the Magenta #145 out for his photo – the Red one I didn’t forget though.
