I have a serious question. Has the bubble burst on Class A figures?
I know there will still be some that demand a premium. But if there are 140 Class A figures how man can still sell for more than $20? My guess would be around 20 to 25 figures. That would mean 82% to 86% of Class A figures are in the $20 price range. Do those numbers sound correct to you?
The first listing, Vintage Mattel M U S C L E Muscle Men Class A Figure LOT 168 Dk Blue 104 Magenta, is an interesting test of my theory. Unfortunately the figures are grouped together. I think that actually hurt this particular lot.
The Dark Blue #138 and the Magenta #104 figures have a $34.99 BIN ($17.50 per figure). That’s not a great price because we saw a Dark Blue #138 recently sell for $13.50. I don’t think anyone wants to pay $21.49 for a Magenta #104 figure.
The seller has included a “Make Offer” option. I think a fair-ish offer would be around $26. Is there any chance a seller would agree to that price?
I think there are going to be a lot of frustrated sellers of Class A figures if more than 80% of the figures can’t sell for more than $20.
The second listing, Lot of M.U.S.C.L.E. Men Kinnikuman Snakeman Dark Nisel Bam Bam Ji Black King, features a very cool tweaked keshi in a color I haven’t seen before. I think it’s a very cool figure.
The $16.95 BIN is very uncool. The four M.U.S.C.L.E. figures are worth $2 as a lot. At most they would be worth $4 as a lot. In my mind, there isn’t a Tweak collector alive that would spend $12.95 to $14.95 for that figure. The lot doesn’t even have free shipping.
The second listing is a poorly price lot that has trapped a very cool figure. Based on some of this seller’s other listings I don’t think the price is coming down anytime soon.
That’s a bummer because the figure it too cool to be trapped in stupid-seller limbo. It deserves to be in a collection.
The third listing, M.U.S.C.L.E. Wrestlers Men Figures & Ring with boxes Vintage Mattel Muscle 1985, is a pretty large M.U.S.C.L.E. lot. The listing’s size has a certain throwback quality.
The lot started at $50. Not the best starting bid ever, but the stuff seems to be in pretty decent condition. I would have thought $50 would have been much closer to the final price. As of writing, the price is at $76.75 for the lot. I am equally shocked by the number of watchers, which sits at 27 as of writing.
Could this go much higher?
I tried to find a somewhat similar lot for comparison’s sake, but it wasn’t easy. Is the $60 first lot close enough? I kept looking, but I was at 2014 before I knew it. I stopped. Let’s just see what happens.
