Auction Watch #267

One of three scenarios exist: (1) I am not a good writer; (2) the English language is lacking the perfect word I need; or (3) both. One seems like the easy answer, but I think the truth is scenario number three.

Seeing these unsold listings, from last week, brings me zero satisfaction. There is no pride in being correct. At the same time, I am not dissatisfied. What is the word I’m looking for? Unhappy-expertise?

Obviously Auction #1 and Auction #2 are still unsold. At those prices I don’t expect them to ever sell. Auction #3 sold. I considered buying it but talked myself out of it. If you know the winner, or are the winner, then please show us that poster.

Auction #4 also sold. There had to be a figure(s) that really got a person excited for that lot. The ring was trash. If someone can explain the $44.99 logic to buying that lot of figures, then I’m all ears. I can’t get to nearly $45 for that lot.

Finally, Auction #5. To my own surprise, I bought it for $26.50. Awesome.

But there were only four bidders. I don’t want to over-value this data point, but I find it interesting. I’ve suggested micro-Class A madness is growing. Maybe micro-M.U.S.C.L.E. madness is growing too? Maybe. The Terrible Wrestling Ring Lot certainly serves as an effective counter-punch. Hmm…let’s look for some more data.

Wow. The M.U.S.C.L.E. listings on eBay this week are grim. Looks like we won’t be finding too much data. But I did find a bright spot.

The first auction, Vintage Mattel M.U.S.C.L.E. SEALED 4-Pack with Claw Hand #153, demands to be watched and respected.

This seller really impressed me. They started the auction at $0.99. Currently there are over two dozen 4-packs listed. I don’t think one of them starts at under $20. And the figure combinations and condition of the packs vary greatly. Most of them aren’t worth $20.

The price wasn’t the part that I considered most impressive. When you search “Rare M.U.S.C.L.E. figures” it is a staggering shitstorm of overpriced routine figures.

This listing does not use “rare” in the auction title. The listing does not use the word “rare” in the auction description. I respect that approach.

M.U.S.C.L.E. is a crazy hobby. We see lots of crazy behavior. And sometimes people will justify crazy behavior, because other people are doing it too. It’s not necessary. This seller isn’t afraid. They aren’t posting hyperbole. They have a nice piece and know M.U.S.C.L.E. collectors will come for it. They don’t need to add crazy into the hobby. Thank you.

Putting “SUPER RARE” or “Rare” into an auction title probably means you’re part of the problem.
