Sociology 200 – Example #1

These pictures are from the summer of 2009, likely June. My son, about 20 months old, had grabbed some extra figures that had been part of an eBay purchase. I had been attempting to sort through them, but he woke up from his nap earlier than I expected. My plan to have everything neatly put away before he woke up was spoiled. While the lot of figures contained several Class A figures, it seemed silly to franticly figure it out.

Instead, we sat for 20 minutes looking at the figures – counting figures, counting arms and legs, identifying the different colors and animals. It was probably the most fun I have ever had with M.U.S.C.L.E. figures.

Because I needed to clean-up and leave the house I told him he could pick three figures. He chose a Dark Blue #153 (which he called “Claw” without any prompt), a Purple #68 (which he calls Obi-Wan), and a Flesh #208 (which he calls Luke). The figures traveled with him that entire day and became a constant plaything during bath time.

Figures #68 and #208 fell out of favor within a few weeks. However, the Dark Blue #153 has remained a “monster” and been incorporated into other toys. He has also chosen a Flesh #153 and Flesh #143 as a “treat” for successfully using the “potty.” Once he discovered the gold coins in the “treat box” were chocolate they superseded any other offering.

i love the fact that he grabbed the claw. it is no wonder that the claw #153 is an icon of the muscle collection as it is easily identifiable and well loved. i find it curious how so many can gravitate to it so easily, including your adorable 20 month old.

That fact that he easily selected #153 was equally parts stunning and not surprising at all.

And thank you for the compliment.
