UofMUSCLE.com – M.U.S.C.L.E. Figures from Mattel

One of the most mysterious, and fun, aspects of M.U.S.C.L.E. collecting relates to the Nestle Quik promotion (which is examined in Advertising & Promotion 300). Figures still sealed within the promotional package, which was enclosed in the Nestle Quik tin, are not often discovered. This week two figures have been discovered.

James Sullivan announced the discovery of these figures on the LittleRubberGuys.com message board.

The first auction, M.U.S.C.L.E. Men Action Figures Wrestling Muscle Lot, features a rather uninteresting lot of Flesh and Color figures. Obviously, the most interesting part of the auction is the Nestle Quik figure in the top right corner of the auction picture. It appears to be figure #21.

The story of the seller’s acquisition of the figure was offered after a potential bidder asked the following question:

Q: How did you come about with the figure in the upper right, in ziploc container? Is the packaging a repackage or something? Thanks

A: Hi! Thanks for your interest. I thought that guy was interesting, too. I had never seen a Muscle man in an individual package before. This is how I found it, at a flea market last summer. It was with a few other Muscle men which were loose, which I included in the auction. The package appears to be factory sealed, not a repackage. I have taken a couple of closer pictures for your inspection. The package is a bit dirty, but I am sure it can be wiped off. I didn’t want to touch it! Have you seen the figure inside before? I don’t know much about these, so I was wondering if it was unique. It seems to be some kind of promotional packaging. Thanks! Kell

A LRG member, vette88, asked for a better picture. The picture sent to him, and posted on the LRG message board, confirms that the figure is #21.

Because the University of M.U.S.C.L.E. has bid on this item, it would be disreputable to suggest a final sale price. However, it is the hope of the University of M.U.S.C.L.E. that the winner bidder submit a high resolution picture of the figure for inclusion in Advertising & Promotion 300.

The second auction, Junk Drawer Lot 80 pc. Pins~Cereal Toys~Rings~Stickers!, features a large array of items. Once again, the Nestle Quik figure is the item of interest to M.U.S.C.L.E. collectors. Because the figure has been packaged with his front facing the cardboard it is difficult to easily identify the figure. Based on the auction picture there were four likely possibilities:

• #31 – Negative: The head does not look bumpy enough.
• #55 – Negative: The arms do not look to be positioned quite right.
• #98 – Negative: It is hard to see the distinctive lines on the back of legs.
• #144 – Negative: The lines on the head are not readily apparent.

Again a LRG member, vette88, asked for a better picture. The picture sent to him, and posted on the LRG message board, confirmed that the figure is #98. The seller offered this additional information:

Goodmorning..I got alot of the stuff I have on on right now from an 88 year old man who is a hoarder..I am helping him unload some of his stuff.The item you are asking about looks like an action figure and yes it is sealed in plastic never opened..looks like it came from a cereal box..
