Auction Watch #7

The M.U.S.C.L.E. Mega-Match Game, like many M.U.S.C.L.E. items, does not demand a premium price. Unfortunately, sellers often feel that the game is interesting, unique, and rare – which means it should be expensive.

Sellers are two-thirds right, the game is interesting and unique but far from being rare. This auction for “M.U.S.C.L.E. mega match game great condition w/ figures” is noteworthy for two main reasons: (1) its price; and (2) its completeness.

The seller has started the auction a bit high. If it sells it is unlikely it will go for much more than its current price. A lower starting bid would have likely increased the activity on this auction, which may have helped propel the final price higher due to the competitiveness of bidding that often arises.

And while the sticker sheet is missing some stickers, it is unusual to see the sticker sheet at all. In most collectors’ minds the most important aspect is the figures. The benefit to buying them from a complete set is that the buyer usually ends up with one shade of light purple and green.

When a set of figures is bough apart from the game, they have sometimes been pieced together from various color lots of figures – resulting in a set of figures that do not share the same shade. Even when there is a game box, closely inspecting the shade of the figures is the most important aspect of getting a true set of game board figures.

Follow-Up: The auction did not receive any bids and did not sell with a starting bid of $16.00. The shipping fees seemed reasonable too, so that does not appear to be a detractor from the perceived overall price. Upon further review, it does appear that they took their main auction picture from another auction. This is a major eBay development, and is discussed further here.
