Auction Watch #62

The first auction, Sealed 1985 Mattel M.U.S.C.L.E. Figures 10 pack, is interesting because with approximately 3 days left it is already at $82.

The auction itself seems fairly routine. The auction picture is acceptable. The shipping is acceptable. And the seller, sozuki15, has spectacular feedback.

Besides the current price of the auction, the second most interesting part of the auction is the condition of the 10-pack. The seller added the following text to their auction description:

There is a little bit of dirt on the top of the container as well as slight scuff marks. You can see them slightly in the pictures. If you need a better picture, please ask.

The seller seems to be interested in being honest – although probably prompted by a potential bidder question. The reason the condition s so interesting is that the weekly Epilogue posts have noticed several 10-packs appearing recently. This 10-pack’s rarity, perceived or real, should not be driving the price. That fact, combined with the condition of the 10-pack, makes the current price even more confusing.

The price of this 10-pack has already exceeded its value. Any bidder willing to pay $82 may be willing to pay even more. A rationale estimation on the final price of this auction is impossible to suggest.

The second auction, Lot of 15 M.U.S.C.L.E. Muscle men Various colors SUPER, is interesting because of its uniqueness. The #153 (the “Claw” or “Hand”) figure is unquestionable the most popular M.U.S.C.L.E. figure. However, the second most popular figure is much more subjective.

The smaller M.U.S.C.L.E. figures have often been customized which does suggest popularity. Although these figures have not received the same attention they once commanded. This auction will be interesting to watch because it features a large number of similar figures.

It would seem that this auction should only appeal to fans of the smaller M.U.S.C.L.E. figures or potentially customizers who see potential in the large group of similar figures.

At first glance there is not anything that could cause concern or suspicion with this auction. Unfortunately, there is a potential very large red flag for M.U.S.C.L.E. collectors. The auction description states:

Up for auction 15 muscle men in various colors. Some could use a scrub. Grreat lot for your collection. Super Meat Mania!!!

Alone the description may not cause concern. However, it becomes very much more suspicious when paired with downtownjacksonbrown801’s recent feedback regarding a M.U.S.C.L.E. auction:

iTEM WAS BROKEN. Seller did not list the item as broken. Seller would not resolv

Given the current price of approximately $38 (approximately $2.50 per figure) it seems unlikely that the price should climb much higher. The final price of this auction will be $41.50.
