Auction Watch #124

The first auction, Vintage 1980s Mattel Lot of 120 M.U.S.C.L.E Men Y/S N.T. Muscle Men, Some Rare, seemed like a wonderful option to follow-up yesterday’s editorial.

This lot, even at a count of approximately 120 figures, is pretty unremarkable. That is until the Future Strength are identified. It looks as if the lot contains five Future Strength figures. For the small niche of collectors that enjoy these figures it is quite a remarkable lot.

Given that most collectors will focus on the other 115 this lot will probably sell for $75.

If the last auction focused on figures that fit within Art 100, then the second auction, OMFG! Series 1 Artist Proofs, Onell Design, Rotofugi, M.U.S.C.L.E. October Toys, focuses on figures that fit within Art 300.

Instant collection lots like this are always very interesting to watch. OMFG figures are an ongoing line (which can still be purchased in the UofM School Store) and lots like this do not pop-up too often. Because of that fact these auctions often become, often inaccurate, barometers that collectors (and investors) use to measure the health and collectibility of a collectible toy line.

Collectors will want to snatch it at a deal and investors will want to see it sell for a small fortune. Odds are that neither will really happen. There seems to still be a healthy balance of supply and demand with OMFG figures. Until something significant shifts lots like this will probably sell quite close to retail prices.

The final price of the second auction will be $135.50.

The last auction, M.U.S.C.L.E. MEN COLLECTION HUGE LOT 20 4 PACKS 4 TRASH CANS ALL MISB VHTF RARE, will have probably ended by the time most readers see it. But that’s ok – it’s still worth taking a look at.

The lot includes 17 4-packs and four 10-packs. It is priced at $449.99 plus $14 shipping, which works out to about $22.09 per pack. At first glance that doesn’t really seem too bad. However the lot has minimal resale value. The 10-packs aren’t Flesh (which always has the best resale price) and the 4-packs don’t seem to contain any super desirable figures, which greatly hurts their prices.

If this lot has sold it will be a stunning surprise. It will also guarantee an influx of overpriced 4- and 10-packs.
