The 28-Pack

The 28-pack write-up has been long delayed because of the desire to add individual pictures of each 28-pack figure. Additionally, there are a few 28-pack pictures that also need to be taken. Instead of withholding the entire topic it seemed better to make the current information available; adding pictures and various improvements over time.

The only documented example of M.U.S.C.L.E. in a mail order catalog is the 1986 Sears Wishbook. Sears, along with Mattel and most advertisers, seemed unsure of the figures proper place – although the placement suggests probably the best understanding of the brand. Read more in Literature 200.

In the previous 28-pack poster offer write-up there had been mention of a Color M.U.S.C.L.E. poster that was completely devoid of any Flesh M.U.S.C.L.E. figures. This is untrue.
The University of M.U.S.C.L.E. apologizes for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused. This mix-up only strengthens the need for all M.U.S.C.L.E. data to be organized and centralized in one location.
The 28-Pack Poster Offer
Posted by Chad Perry in Advertising & Promotion, UofM News on September 28, 2009
A piece of the 28-packs worthy of its own dissection is the poster offer. For many collectors it is specifically the small picture accompanying the poster offer that elicits discussion. No single piece of tangible M.U.S.C.L.E. information causes so much speculation. For many collectors it fuels the theory that all the Kinnikuman sculpts were originally slated for Mattel’s M.U.S.C.L.E. release. Others simply consider it a place-holding throwaway picture.

Mattel created catalogs for toy store owners to use as a reference as they ordered, or re-ordered, merchandise. M.U.S.C.L.E. first appeared in Mattel’s 1986 catalog. The next year was the final one for M.U.S.C.L.E in the Mattel catalog. The 1987 catalog makes it clear that M.U.S.C.L.E. was not a top priority.
